Scientific research and technological development (R&D) are an important component of DEQ's activities, accounting for approximately 50% of the involvement of its teaching staff. DEQ's teaching staff are part of IST's Research Units (RUs), which consistently demonstrate high scientific productivity and are classified as Excellent by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). These IUs operate semi-independently, allowing them to define their own research focus areas, manage allocated resources (both human and laboratory) and seek out funding opportunities.
