The Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ) is a department of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) under the terms of Annex I of the IST Statutes, published in the Diário da República on September 25, 2013.

Mission

DEQ has the objective of carrying out teaching activities at the undergraduate, master's and post-graduate levels, fundamental and applied scientific research, development, and providing other external services in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering and Chemistry, namely in the areas of chemical, biochemical, food and pharmaceutical industries and connecting with the areas of management, materials, environment, energy and health, for the sustainable development of humankind and the society.

History

'Chemical-Industrial' Engineering was one of the five engineering courses created with IST in 1911. Its initial list sought to be updated and included subjects such as "Electrochemistry" and "Chemistry-Physics and Radioactivity".
